Xavier Institute of Management is considered a ‘Management Institute with a human face’ and rightly so. On 19th August, we celebrated World Humanitarian day as leading dignitaries graced our event. Lighting of the lamp was done by the chief guest T.Nandakumar, National Disaster Management Authority. Then, Mr. Dipankar Dutta, Country Director, Concern Worldwide gave us a talk on what this day stands for and why it is being celebrated. This day is celebrated not only to remember tragedies but also to remind us the essence of humanity. According to him, the difficulties that humanitarians face while going about their task are enormous and hence, the need to recognize their achievements and to motivate them to keep on their hard work is necessary. Then, we had the lighting of candles in memory of those who died fighting for humanity. Then, Mr. T. Parasuraman, the director of TISS gave his views on how as management students we can help humanity move forward and can be associated with humanitarian works. After that, we had a discussion on humanitarian trends and challenges by Prof S. Peppin from XIMB and Mr T.V. Sebastian, Concern Worldwide. Then people from UNDP, Red Cross, and UNICEF shared their humanitarian experiences. This was followed by a special address by Mihir Bhatt, all India Disaster Mitigation Institute, Ahmedabad who said it’s not only important to work on human disasters mitigation but also essential to to foresee and avoid them. Finally, we had an award presentation and a vote of thanks by Mr. Chiranjeet Das, Concern Worldwide. Thus, we, the future mangers, realised that it’s not only important for us to indulge in business but also essential for us to ensure the existence of the communities we serve.
